Grant Haskin (ACDP) is Cape Town's new deputy mayor - and the third person to wear the chain since March 2006.

Nearly two months after being rejected by Mayor Helen Zille as he did not represent his party's ACDP "diverse slate", Haskin was voted in on Wednesday.

He succeeds the ID's Charlotte Williams, who resigned officially on October 17.

Haskin, who has been the mayoral committee member for sport and amenities, said his election came after the ACDP agreed that three "white males" in council positions, one a subcouncil chair, would step down.

In his acceptance speech, Haskin acknowledged the "difficulties in the city", but said the ACDP would "stand firm" in the multiparty government.
