Johannesburg - Suspended Hawks Head Major-General Johan Booysen wants his job back now that the murder and racketeering charges against him will be officially withdrawn tomorrow in the Durban High Court.
He also believes the 27 officers, from the now disbanded Cato Manor organised crime unit, who are accused of running a criminal enterprise will also soon be vindicated.
“The charges against me were withdrawn because I challenged the prosecution against me. Regarding legal action of the other 27 accused officers, our line of thought is that the then head of prosecution signed one certificate (for charges) against all of us. The next move is contacting the National Prosecuting Authority at a national not provincial level to review the issuing of the certificate. If that fails we will approach the prosecution team to give us the particulars of the case. We believe there is no evidence in the docket to justify charges of racketeering,” he said.
Booysen, who was arrested and suspended in 2012, would not say if he intends suing the state, except that he was meeting with his attorney Carl Van Der Merwe tomorrow.
“I cannot comment if I will be taking legal action. I can say I will be challenging my suspension,” he said.
Booysen was charged alongside 30 officers, two have since died, from the Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, dubbed by the media as the “Cato Manor Death Squad”. - The Sunday Independent
