'He parks official cars, claims for his own'

Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale uses his own vehicle on official trips and later pockets thousands of rand in travelling claims.

This is despite having spent millions of rand of taxpayers money to buy expensive vehicles for use on official trips.

The Star has seen a document from the premier’s office detailing how Mathale, who presides over a near-bankrupt province, has been cashing in on travel claims.

The document shows that for September last year alone, he was paid R446 000, including the R75 000 monthly salary he gets as premier.

Mathale has bought two expensive cars during the two years he has been premier.

Shortly after his appointment in April 2009, he bought a BMW 750i for R1 million. Last June he added a BMW X5, costing R821 000, to his garage.

But it has since emerged that Mathale prefers to park the state vehicles so that he can enjoy the benefits that come from using his own car.

This information comes in the wake of central government’s intervention in Limpopo’s financial affairs as it teeters on the brink of bankruptcy.

Mashadi Mathosa, the premier’s spokeswoman, on Monday defended Mathale’s use of his personal cars.

“The Ministerial Handbook gives him the prerogative to use his private vehicle and claim,” she said.

The handbook came under intense criticism after new ministers in President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet splashed out millions of rand on new vehicles after the 2009 elections.

Many of the ministers bought expensive top-of-the-range German sedans for their official use in Pretoria and Cape Town. - The Star

There is no other party other than the DA that could root out these corrupt officials! If my memory serves me, the DA had questioned the ligitimacy of this so called "Handbook" but were challenged by the ANC who insist it is within the ANC's policies! What a party, what a mess! I hope all who vote for the ANC are embarrassed by these goings on!

@ Bob Thorne: "Or could there be the almost unimaginable reportereditor error?" Nope... you cannot read. It states "for September last year alone" That means he got his R75000 salary and claimed R371000 in traveling expenses.

The incessant, cantankerous howling and unrestrained, contumelious baiting by self-appointed critics [sans mandate], of His Excellency, Cde. Premier Mathale, does not detract from the towering revolutionary achievements in Polokwane that are now a matter of historical record. Even the barking counter-revolutionaries cannot deny that in Polokwane today, under the visionary leadership of the esteemed Premier, a new dawn is emerging, a xenon light is shining, that will serve as a beacon for the rest of South Africa and ultimately the world. While the hostile few will quibble over this vehicle or that tender, it is undeniable that emerging local businesses and networked consortia are indded being TRULY EMPOWERED by the pro-active, tenderpreneur-friendly, provincial government. THIS is true transformation ! THIS is the Fiefdom Charter in action. Forward to fiefdom! Viva!

no surprise when him and Juliass play together. Over R400 000 in claims for one month? Who would like to bet that R300 000 of that is false claims.....

Until the government PROVES that it is serious about corruption, i.e. fire people, I won't believe that this government is serious about corruption.

The ANC has become a legal, money-laundering mafioso. And the corruption heightened when bra Zuma entered the family. Is this latest scandal not in the same province where Baby Boy Malema lives? Seems like there are so many devils in this country, it will need earth-moving equipment to root out all the maggots that call themselves representatives of the people. Some are in jail, others on suspension, some under investigation, others expelled, yet the cancer is so ubiquitous, it is tantamount to a catastrophic epidemic. The ONLY way that this steamrolling joke called the ANC can be stopped, is to not vote for them. Simple.

This excuse of a human being needs to be made an example of. He is the worst of the worst and should face the worst punishment possible to show the rest of these types of thugs what they can look forward to. He definitely has something on Zuma with regards to the Arms deal, there is no other reason that he still has his salary and his freedom. I think its time to open robben island again, dont you?

How much per km does the handbook allow the premier to claim? R446k - R75k = R371000 for travelling!!! Must be R100km!! Next question, does he declare this on his income tax return?

If you're earning R75K pm, you have more than enough to live comfortably, & that's excluding all the (legitimate) perks that come with the job. This is pure greed, & I wouldnt be surprised if this is a common occurence by many others. How many more similar ploys are being used to suck us dry. These people think govt money is inexhaustible, but worse, they dont realise, this money belongs to the people & doesnt grow on trees.
