Durban - Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) employees in KwaZulu-Natal will not go on strike, the organisation said on Thursday.
IEC employees affiliated to the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) had planned to down tools ahead of the last voter registration drive this weekend.
In a joint statement by the provincial government, the IEC, and Nehawu, IEC provincial head Mawethu Mosery said: “We have found each other together with Nehawu and we commit ourselves to continue working to resolve the issues that have been raised.
“We assure all KZN citizens that it is all systems go in as far as this weekend's final voter registration is concerned.”
The strike was averted following an intervention by the provincial government.
“The... registration weekend can now proceed as planned,” said co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
Last month, it was reported the IEC employees had complained about their working conditions. Their complaints included insufficient and inadequate vehicles, unfair transfer practices, and unpaid overtime.
On Thursday, Nehawu provincial secretary Zola Saphetha said employees were prepared to continue working.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of the discussions with regards to agreements in handling the areas of dispute,” Saphetha said.
“We will receive a progress report on February 25 and we will determine a further course of action thereafter.”
