The affordable education loan option
Cape Town -
Following the popular “Proudly Brought by ANC” hashtag hijacking, users on Twitter have commandeered a new ANC slogan to paint a bleak picture of the country under the party’s rule.
Over the past week, descriptions of crime, job losses and scams were tweeted with the tag “#KnowYourANC”.
The Twitter trend has sparked an online campaign, with SA Institute for Race Relations deputy chief executive Frans Cronje challenging the idea that everything has “slipped” under ANC rule.
Over the past six days, he has used the institute’s Twitter account to share facts and figures from its research that highlighted some of the successes since 1994.
“Every day for the next ten days #IRRknowyourANC will release one amazing fact about progress in SA under the ANC,” the institute tweeted last week.
“Since the ANC came to power the number of black African students getting degrees increased by 269%,” read one tweet.
Challenging allegations that the ANC had allowed crime to get out of control, Cronje tweeted that the murder rate had halved since the party assumed power.
He also pointed out that the past 20 years had seen more than 5 million households get electricity.
The most telling statistic, in a country where job losses and cutbacks have become commonplace, was that under the ANC more than six million new jobs had been created over the past 20 years.
