Cape Town - Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel says he has “too much affection” for Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu to discuss his comments publicly.

Manuel was referring to an incident at a Kader Asmal commemoration at Kirstenbosch at the weekend at which Tutu was recorded as telling Manuel: “You don’t belong in this government.”

Tutu also slammed the state of education and the price tag for work under way at Nkandla.

Manuel’s office would not comment on the incident on Wednesday. But Manuel told Midday Report on 702 and 567 Cape Talk that Tutu could always “jibe” at him and was like a father to him.

“I think we must separate that out from substantive discussions we need to have… I’m not going to be drawn into something. I have too much affection for [Tutu].”
