Pretoria - Johanna Mashinini was a “South African on a mission” when she arrived at the Union Buildings on Saturday morning - to take a photograph with former President Thabo Mbeki.

Mashinini, who came from Johannesburg's east rand, said she had taken selfies with former heads of state Nelson Mandela and Kgalema Mothlanthe in the past.

She took another with Jacob Zuma during the Siyanqoba rally at FNB Stadium in the eve of the May 7 general election.

Mbeki is the only head of state whose photo, with her by his side, does not appear on the wall in her living room.

“I am really hoping to meet with him today. I collect the photos so that I can show my grandchildren some day,” the staunch ANC supporter said.

Mashinini said South Africans should give Zuma a chance going into his second term as President.

“The country is much better than it was in 1994. No head of state can turn around everything in a short time. Bit by bit, one project and area at a time, the ANC government will make the country better,” she added. - Pretoria News Weekend
