Free State - Newly elected Free State DA leader Patricia Kopane wants to draw 31 percent support for her party in the next election, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Monday.

Kopane was elected as the first black woman to lead a provincial Democratic Alliance structure at the weekend.

She told the newspaper she was excited about her new responsibility. She succeeds Roy Jankielsohn as leader of the Free State DA.

Kopane was a former councillor in the Mangaung municipality and is now a DA MP. She is also the party’s spokeswoman on health.

“I believe I was elected because of my abilities and not because I am black or a woman,” she told the newspaper.

Annelie Lotriet, also a DA MP, was elected as chairwoman of the DA Free State.

Jankielsohn would, for now, remain DA leader in the Free State Legislature. - Sapa
