Johannesburg - Kenny Kunene raasied some eyebrows on social media on Thursday after posting a picture of himself posing with a painting of nude DA leaders.

In the tweet he said: “I am now a proud owner of this masterpiece. Powerful story telling through art... Thanks to the fearless artist.”

The picture shows Helen Zille and DA federal executive James Selfe with their legs open and their genitals exposed, with naked DA leader Mmusi Maimane pulling them on a rickshaw with a number plate “modern slavery”.

When contacted for comment, Zille said she would be ignoring the painting. When asked why, she said that was all she had to say.

The artist's name has not yet been released, and Kunene could not be reacted for comment at the time of publication. Maimane’s spokesman could not be reached either.

The party’s spokeswoman, Phumzile van Damme, said said: “We believe that artists have the right to freedom of expression. They need to be provocative. But in this case we don’t know if this painting was the vision of the artist or that of Kunene. But we do not agree with the message.”

The picture drew mixed reactions on Twitter, with some saying it was freedom of expression and others calling it a crime.

#KennyKunene silly. Extreme low IQ if you call this is a 'masterpiece', worse if you painted it. https://t.co/3bodNnQ6Br
