Durban - A campaign aimed at promoting the importance of education to society will be stepped up this year, the KwaZulu-Natal ANC said on Wednesday.

“Our volunteer corps movement will play a role in this campaign by monitoring the functioning of schools,” spokesman Bongani Mthembu said in a statement.

Residents would be encouraged to prevent pupils from skipping classes. The movement would try to insulate pupils from social ills such as gang violence and drugs.

The African National Congress in the province was pleased most schools opened smoothly on Wednesday. It was satisfied that schools were ready for the new academic year, but remained concerned about schools that could not function at their best because of transport and infrastructure problems.

“The ANC calls on the department of education to speed up interventions in these schools.”

People needed to report these schools, so they could get help.

Earlier, KwaZulu-Natal education department spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said there appeared to be fewer parents arriving on the first day of school to register their children.

While “pockets” of parents who failed to do this last year were expected, he said the department's media campaign had eased late registrations. - Sapa
