Durban – Two senior African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) members were shot in Newcastle, police said on Monday.

Police spokesman Major Shooz Magudulela confirmed that the 28-year old Wandile Ngubeni had been killed, while Mafika Mndebele was critically wounded in the attack on Sunday night in Newcastle’s Madadeni area.

Ngubeni was the ANCYL regional deputy chairman while Mndebele is the regional secretary for the ANC’s eMalahleni Region.

Magudulela said: “The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage. Madadeni police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. No arrest has been made at this stage.”

A statement released by the youth league’s provincial executive on Monday said that the attack was carried out by two hitmen who opened fire at “a table of about nine comrades”.

ANCYL called on the province’s MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu to form a special task team to investigate the murder.

“We want the investigation to focus on finding who are the planners of this assassination of our leader. The Youth League will be unleashing Young Lions to collect all information which will help speed up the investigation. We demand justice for the death of our leader,” the statement read.
