The Gauteng legislature will consider a report by the privileges and ethics committee on housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi on Friday, the DA said.

“The legislature does not have the power to fire Mmemezi, but an adverse ruling will heighten the pressure on premier Nomvula Mokonyane to boot him out of office,” DA MPL Jack Bloom said on Tuesday.

Mmemezi has made headlines for his alleged misuse of government funds, including a claim that he used his department-issued credit card to buy a R10 000 painting from a fast-food restaurant in Pretoria.

The privileges and ethics committee report would be based on an investigation by the legislature's integrity commissioner Ralph Mgijima into the alleged credit card misspending, said Bloom.

It would also address allegations that Mmemezi misled the legislature in his replies to questions about an accident with his official vehicle in KwaZulu-Natal last year, according to Bloom.

Last week, The Star newspaper reported that Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane planned to fire Mmemezi when she returned from a trip to China.

However, provincial ANC spokesman Dumisa Ntuli denied the report. – Sapa
