Two women slapped each other outside the civic theatre in Lenasia on Monday where Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale was scheduled to address residents.
People starting arguing over who were legal and illegal residents in Lenasia, where illegally built houses have been demolished in the last week.
Residents who claimed to be legal occupiers of land were angry at the presence of what they viewed as “invaders”.
A fight broke out between two women from the two opposing sides, with the two having to be forced apart after slapping each other.
As the groups moved into the hall where Sexwale would speak, the police formed a human chain between the rival groups.
Earlier, Sexwale visited three stands where houses were demolished in Lenasia.
Making his way over broken bricks and scattered building sand, the minister tried to listen to the frustrations of residents who had been affected by the demolitions.
Acting on the instructions of Cabinet to try to resolve the matter peacefully, the minister asked residents to be patient as facts were being gathered. - Sapa
