Polokwane - The EFF in Limpopo on Tuesday labelled the ANC in the region sore losers after it alleged the Economic Freedom Fighters colluded with management of the University of Limpopo to win SRC elections.

“It was a very childish and irresponsible statement to make,” EFF Limpopo legislature member Joe Buthane said.

“We will encourage the university management to take action.”

Beeld reported on Tuesday that the African National Congress in the province accused the university of colluding with the EFF so that it wins.

“We know management wanted the EFF to win,” spokeswoman Khumbudzo Ntshaveni was quoted as saying.

The institution on Monday released a statement refuting the claims. Spokesman Kgalema Mohuba said the university was considering taking action against the party.

“The university in its rejection of this despicable and libellous claim due to its lack of veracity at any level is considering a number of options at its disposal to correct this malicious statement,” he said.

He said the institution would not allow its reputation and integrity to be dragged in the mud.

“For the record, we had incidence-free elections conducted by the IEC, a Chapter 9 institution which has an obligation to be impartial as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,” he said.

Buthane said the party had to accept the loss and move on. He said the elections were a sign that students had lost confidence in the party.

“They had no presidential candidate ahead of the elections because they were fighting amongst themselves. If they continue to make such utterances, we are going to take them to task,” he said.

ANC provincial co-ordinator Musa Tshabane said the information about vote rigging was received from structures at the institution.

“Information we receive is from structures on the ground. That is the information we received from the structures and we are paying attention to the issues the structures have raised with us,” he said.
