Johannesburg - Former ANC Youth League national executive committee (NEC) member Andile Lungisa is toying with the idea of becoming the league's next president, The New Age reported on Thursday.

In an interview with the newspaper he said the positions he previously held in the ANCYL might bolster his chances of leading it.

“Age is still on my side and I have the energy to be the league president, but that will be determined by the membership.

“And I know the league, because I had the opportunity of being part of it as deputy president, a member of the national working committee, as well as that of the NEC,” he was quoted as saying.

African National Congress secretary-general Gwede Mantashe on Monday announced the ruling party had dissolved the ANCYL executive committee.

The decision was taken at a three-day NEC meeting at the weekend.

An interim team would be selected and put in place by the national working committee.

The task team, which would be called the national task team (NTT) of the ANCYL, would take over responsibility of the league's NEC and work on rebuilding the youth league.

A new national leadership would be elected at a later stage, but no time frame was given.

Lungisa apologised to ANCYL members for the dissolution of its national leadership.

He told the newspaper the apology was meant to appease all those who might have been hurt by the disbanding.

“We were all surprised by it, because the ANC adopted the resolutions in Mangaung about the league. And we were still working with the national leadership of the ANC on those resolutions when the NEC was disbanded,” Lungisa said.

Delegates at the ANC conference resolved that the incoming NEC should meet the ANCYL to resolve disputes between the two.

In his organisational report at the conference, Mantashe said the ANCYL was acting in a similar manner to forces which were against the party. The ANC and ANCYL had met several times before the decision was made to disband the league's national leadership. - Sapa
