Majola to head Human Rights Commission

Parliament – The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the nomination of Bongani Majola as chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission as well as that of six commissioners for appointment by President Jacob Zuma.

Majola was the assistant secretary general of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and was shortlisted recently for the post of Public Protector, which went to Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The National Assembly also approved the nomination by the portfolio committee on justice of Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal as deputy chairwoman of the SAHRC.

The five commissioners are Andre Gaum, Angelina Makwetla, Joseph Malatji, former African National Congress politician Chris Nissen and Jonas Sibanyoni.
