Malema’s fate up for discussion?

Johannesburg - The African National Congress on Sunday would not comment on reports that an upcoming national executive meeting would discuss the fate of expelled youth leader Julius Malema.

“The agenda of the meeting is private and we are not commenting on newspaper reports,” spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said of the Monday meeting.

The special NEC was convened to discuss preparations for the party's national policy conference. But according to the Sunday Times and the Sunday Independent, it would also discuss Malema's fate.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa, and deputy secretary-general Thandi Modise were not in favour of Malema's expulsion, the Sunday Times reported.

ANC Youth League spokesperson Magdalene Moonsamy was quoted as saying: “We are expecting the matter to be discussed and resolved in the executive meeting on Monday.”

The Sunday Independent noted that Malema did not enjoy popular support among NEC members. President Jacob Zuma was believed to enjoy majority support, according to the paper.

Mthembu said the NEC members would decide on the day of the meeting whether they would hold a press briefing or not. The meeting would take place in Irene, outside Pretoria. - Sapa
