Johannesburg - The National Youth Development Agency should move faster in helping young people, Deputy Minister of Performance and Monitoring in the Presidency Buti Manamela said on Monday.

“I met with the NYDA two days after my appointment, and told its leadership that we are aware that there has been change, but that the change should come much faster,” Manamela said at The New Age's breakfast briefing in Johannesburg.

Earlier, Manamela said the National Youth Development Act, promulgated in 2008, would undergo a review. The act gave birth to the NYDA.

He said the NYDA should be a resource on where to go in terms of bursaries or employment for the youth.

The NYDA chairman Yershen Pillay said the NYDA was there to support the youth.

“The NYDA will not deliver you to the promised land… it will not give you a job. One should do that themself with the help of the NYDA,” Pillay said.

He said his organisation's task of reaching the youth was enormous.

“We cannot have the NYDA do it alone, youth development should be a concern for everyone and every sector in our country,” said Pillay. - Sapa
