Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday visited former president Nelson Mandela at his Johannesburg home to convey “good wishes”.

“He had the brightest smile, and it was exciting to discuss with him the upcoming State of the Nation address and the Afcon tournament,” Zuma said in a statement.

Mandela was found to be “comfortable and relaxed” watching television.

The Presidency said Zuma was on his way to the final match of the African Cup of Nations when he visited Mandela at his Houghton home.

“President Zuma conveyed the good wishes to Madiba from all over the world,” said Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj.

Mandela spent 18 days in a Pretoria hospital between December and January.

This was his longest stay in hospital since he was freed from apartheid imprisonment over two decades ago.

Mandela has a history of lung problems, having suffered from tuberculosis towards the end of his 27-year prison term.

Zuma is scheduled to deliver his State of the Nation address to a joint sitting in Parliament on February 14. - Sapa
