Jerusalem - Nelson Mandela did not get to meet Arthur Goldreich, the former Rivonia trialist who has lived in Israel since he escaped from jail in the mid-60s.

But Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak had a surprise for Mandela, who is on a visit to the Middle East.

He introduced the former president to Dov Sidelsky, son of Lazar Sidelsky, the Johannesburg lawyer who took Mandela into his firm to do his articles in Johannesburg in the 1950s, a time when very few white men would hire a black lawyer.

Dov is now a teacher in Jerusalem.

"The last time I saw you was on your wedding day to Winnie. I was 6," Dov told Mandela.

He said he remembered the day because Mandela had brought his wedding procession past their home as a mark of respect to his father.
