Beijing - On the first anniversary since his passing on President Jacob Zuma led messages of support and paid homage to the late statesman Nelson Mandela during his state visit in China.

While attending a business forum between South Africa and China in Beijing on Friday Zuma described the late leader as a giant who led the country into a new chapter.

It was through his dedication and commitment that South Africa has a solid democratic foundation.

“President Mandela’s vision that inspired us on the road to building a cohesive, united non-racial South Africa, is still very much alive today and continues to shape our vision for our country,” said Zuma on his last day of his state visit in China.

He said Mandela will continue to inspire the nation.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies described Mandela to the 1000 businesspeople in Beijing as a great leader.

He added that Mandela was an extraordinary leader.

Chairperson of the Brics Business Council chapter in China Ma Zehua said Mandela inspired a generation in his lifetime.

He said he was greatly admired in China for his fight for freedom.

This was even evident when a Hong Kong-based band composed a song in his honour and respect 20 years ago.

The song was still as popular as it was then when it was first released in 1994.

He said it was no coincidence that the band, called Beyond, titled the song “Glorious Days.”

Ma said this was one of the most popular songs in China as it talks about Mandela’s legacy and endless campaign against apartheid.

Tributes and messages for support for Mandela came as the country marked exactly a year after he died at his home in Johannesburg.

He was 95 years old at the time of his death. There are celebrations planned across the country on Friday and the weekend.
