The ANC Mangaung conference is not just about electing leaders but should also spur the party on to deal with certain 'weaknesses', said the party's KZN chairman Zweli Mkhize on Saturday.

“The focus of this conference is not more about spending all the time thinking about who to elect. What will be interesting about Mangaung is more the outcomes and the impact of those outcomes out of the conference and the extent to which the ANC is able to organise itself to deal with some of the weaknesses that have been witnessed publicly,” he told reporters at a briefing during the KwaZulu-Natal provincial nomination conference held in Durban.

He said the province of KZN would go to Mangaung to do everything to ensure that the ANC becomes stronger.

“The truth of the matter is that whoever gets elected in the ANC would have been part of the ANC at one level of leadership or another.

“Our main concern in this, is a concern that KwaZulu-Natal must be able to provide a contribution in the positive outcomes of Mangaung,” Mkhize said.

When asked if he would agree to stand if nominated to one of the top six positions of the ANC, Mkhize said: “You don’t have the authority to ask me to comment on nominations. It is the electoral officer who must do that.”

On Saturday, the delegation verification at the conference went smoothly with only a few dozen branches, out of the 828 attending the conference, to process.

Only two branches had raised queries and these were sorted out quickly.

Mkhize would not speculate on how many delegates the province would take to Mangaung.

“Our point is simple. We expect to take the full quota into Mangaung. I can’t give you the figures now. To talk on authority before an audit is a little dicey.”

In his earlier address in the conference, Mkhize said those who might be granted leadership positions in the ANC needed to be assessed.

When he was asked about the qualities needed for these positions, he said: “It is not something in which we can give you a scorecard and say on this item this is the score.

“This is a political assessment of the performance of a leadership both collectively and individual contributions.”

The nominations will be done on Sunday. - Sapa
