ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe conducted a voter campaign in Marikana, near Rustenburg in the North West on Saturday, the party said.

“The African National Congress was welcomed by the community of Marikana who wanted to raise key challenges facing them, including the lack of housing, proper sanitation and the dire need for jobs for young people in the area,” spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.

Mantashe was accompanied by African National Congress provincial secretary Dakota Legoete and Rustenburg local municipality mayor Mpho Khunou.

The three assured residents that communication between government and platinum producer in the area, Lonmin, was continuing to ensure housing delivery.

The ANC committed to better visibility of its councillors to engage with residents on a regular basis and address pressing issues, Mthembu said.
