Durban - The DA’s KwaZulu-Natal legislature caucus leader, Sizwe Mchunu, has found his way back to the party’s federal council, its highest decision making body between conferences.

This comes after Mchunu was nominated by MPLs in the legislature to represent them on the federal council – which is composed of representation from party structures.

He took up the federal council position previously occupied by MPL Francois Rodgers, who at the last provincial council was chosen as finance chairman.

Mchunu downplayed his nomination, saying he had served on the federal council for 10 years.

“It’s not anything new. I have been in that structure for years,” said Mchunu, who lost out to incumbent DA provincial leader, Zwakele Mncwango, at the Richards Bay provincial congress earlier this year.

Mchunu also said that apart from being the caucus legislature leader, he served on another federal structure which handled the selection of mayoral candidates.

Commenting on Mchunu’s serving on the federal council, Mncwango said: “It is not a big issue.”

He said Mchunu filled the KZN post on the federal council for MPLs after being chosen by MPLs because Rogers, as

finance chairman, automatically served on the federal council.

Meanwhile, Howick MP Greg Krumbock has been nominated to represent MPs on the federal council.

He is taking up a position previously occupied by Dianne Kohler Barnard, who resigned while facing a disciplinary hearing after the uproar over a Facebook post on former president PW Botha.

“The MPs had chosen Dianne (to represent them), but after the saga she resigned from the federal council.

“So she is no longer a member of federal council,” Mncwango said.
