Durban – The African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal said on Monday night that it welcomed the resignation of Senzo Mchunu as premier of the province.

The league said Mchunu’s resignation and redeployment to the National Assembly was “in the best interest of unity and service delivery in the province”.

Mchunu resigned on Monday afternoon. In a statement released late Monday, he confirmed that his decision to step down followed a meeting held last Friday with the ANC’s provincial leadership, where he said that six accusations were levelled against him.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu will take over the position of KZN Premier.

Mchunu had come under fire from the provincial ANCYL after the November provincial elective conference where he lost his re-election bid as chairman to then ANC KZN secretary, Sihle Zikalala.

The league called on Mchunu to take control of his supporters and denounce their actions after they questioned the results of the election.

But on Monday night, the league thanked Mchunu for his service as Premier.

“We are confident that he would still be able to make a significant contribution in the National Assembly.”

The league also called on the ANC to “beef up” the provincial executive through deploying former leaders of the ANCYL to cabinet to speed up service delivery in the province.

“We have a number of bright minds in the Legislature, including the likes of Sihle Zikalala, Mthandeni Dlungwane, Mxolisi Kaunda, Nomagugu Simelane, Nontembeko Boyce and Bongi Sithole, Mdumiseni Ntuli among others, who are all our former leaders.”
