Johannesburg - The government commended the media on Friday for its role in strengthening democracy.
“Government joins the country's media industry in commemorating Media Freedom Day, which resulted in legislative guarantees of press freedom and editorial independence,” acting government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said in a statement.
On October 19, 1977, the country's then government banned three publications and outlawed 17 anti-apartheid groups. The one-day crackdown came to be known as Black Wednesday.
Williams said the media had been free of state control since the advent of democracy.
“The media industry has played a crucial role in transforming South Africa into a democratic state and is currently at the forefront in shaping the public discourse.”
