Johannesburg - The FW De Klerk Foundation on Saturday expressed concern about possible threats to media freedom in South Africa.

“Although press freedom in South Africa... is enjoyed and protected generally, there are indicators of threats to press freedom,” said foundation spokesman Jacques du Preez.

The foundation issued a statement in recognition of Press Freedom Day on Saturday.

Du Preez said while media freedom was protected by the Constitution -”weighed against” the theme for this year's press freedom day, SA did not appear to entirely measure up.

The theme for the day includes reflection on the media's importance in development, the safety of journalists and the rule of law as well as the sustainability and integrity of journalism. - Sapa
