Johannesburg - A large number of ANC members have started chanting slogans and singing liberation songs at the fifth OR Tambo regional congress in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, SABC reported on Saturday.

The OR Tambo region was a traditional battlefield of the ANC.

The region was the ANC's biggest in the Eastern Cape and the second biggest nationally after the Ethekwini Region in KZN.

Security has been tightened at the Walter Sisulu University where the congress was being held.
