Cape Town - Ministers have responded to over 96 percent of written questions put to them in the 2012 parliamentary year, acting Cabinet spokeswoman Phumla Williams said on Friday.
“At least 96.05 percent of the 3998 parliamentary questions asked to Cabinet ministers in 2012 have so far been answered within the stipulated time frame,” Williams said in a statement.
Last year, the government responded to 95 percent of the 3879 questions put to it by MPs.
“The above statistics show government's accountability and commitment to transparency to the people of South Africa,” said Williams.
She conceded that, in some cases, answers were delayed because ministers had to first source information from divisions in their departments or the state entities which reported to them.
“The executive aims to answer all questions and give well-considered responses at all times, to ensure that accountability to Parliament and the public stays on top of its agenda.”
