KwaZulu-Natal ANC chairman Zweli Mkhize.

Disrespect of ANC leadership, party structures and policy decisions was leading to dysfunctional structures, KwaZulu-Natal chairman Zweli Mkhize said on Friday.

“Even though they may not be features of the ANC in our province, they remain symptoms of an organisation beginning to self-destruct and will also have a significant impact in the future of our movement,” he said, presenting his political report.

“There are members who have deliberately flouted rules of the organisation, persistently disregarding any guidance which itself is rejected with derogatory remarks about elected leaders.”

He said this resulted in the erosion of the credibility of the leadership and the ability to maintain internal discipline.

Ill-discipline was identified by Mkhize in the political report as an emerging problem within the party.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is holding its provincial congress in Newcastle this weekend.

The province, which is President Jacob Zuma's home province and biggest support base, was the ruling party's biggest province with 252,668 members.

Mkhize said the party in the province welcomed the decision by the national disciplinary committee of appeal to remove ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.

He said the province was “unconvinced” that the provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANCYL in the province needed to be suspended.

The provincial leadership worked well with the ANCYL in the province.

KwaZulu-Natal secretary Sihle Zikalala told reporters after the morning session of the congress that the ANCYL's PEC disbandment was factional.

However, the regional branches of the ANCYL were still functioning and the ANC had been playing a supportive role.

In his key notes address earlier, Zuma said a resolution needed to be taken on dealing with ill-discipline. - Sapa
