Durban - The unity of the Congress of SA Trade Unions, the SA Communist Party and the African National Congress at a local level was a matter of concern, KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize said on Friday.

Speaking at the start of a three-day alliance summit in Durban, Mkhize said that at a provincial level, the alliance was working well together.

However, the 2011 local government elections had highlighted problems within the alliance at that level.

“There was huge consternation during the local government elections. At times it look liked a contestation (sic) between components of the alliance.”

He said the issue of candidates disputing nomination results had been clearly visible to all.

He questioned what type of leadership the alliance wanted to see in the future: one which was selfless, or one which was materialistic and self serving?

The conference ends on Sunday. - Sapa
