Johannesburg - The North West must aim for the top spot in the 2014 matric examination, premier Thandi Modise said on Wednesday.

“The North West province should not be complacent about obtaining second position...” she said in a statement.

On Monday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced a 78.2 percent pass rate for the 2013 matric class. In 2009, when Motshekga took over as minister, the pass rate was 60.6 percent. It has climbed steadily since then.

The Free State and North West became the first and second best performing provinces in the country.

The North West improved from 79.5 percent to 87.2 percent.

The Free State increased its pass rate from 81.1 percent in 2012 to 87.4 in 2013.

Modise extended her congratulations to all matriculants.

“The matric class of 2013 has served as role models for the class of 2014 which should aim to beat the remarkable improvement and record set.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that we attain the goals we set ourselves as the province.” - Sapa
