Pretoria - The opposition Congress of the People (Cope) said South Africa’s intelligence agency lacked intelligence and called on President Jacob Zuma to fire the State Security Minister David Mahlobo.

“To have a minister like David Mahlobo who is clueless about intelligence, puts our country in danger,” said Cope spokesman Dennis Bloem.

Cope said it believed that the intelligence agency should have known of the impending violent protests in Tshwane in Gauteng if it was active and effective

Bloem called on Zuma to fire Mahlobo because he was failing in the performance of his duty as the minister of intelligence.

“It is expected that the minister of intelligence briefs the president of the country on a daily basis about the state of the country pertaining the state of the national security.”

Earlier in the week, Mahlobo claimed that they knew the people who were fuelling the protests which have caused widespread damage in the capital city Pretoria and other areas in Tshwane.

He said Mahlobo and Zuma should have acted before the violence erupted, or arrested the perpetrators.

“Why wait for such big damage to occur then come out now to tell us all this nonsense. As the country we can’t afford to have this Mahlobo because we do not want to have this kind of thing happening all over again,” said Bloem

“The ruling party must stop blaming the oppositions each time it is faced with a problem,” he added.
