Cape Town - The firmest indication yet that neither Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe nor National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel are on the ANC candidate lists to return to the cabinet after the May 7 poll has come from Parliament’s programme.

The national legislature has scheduled “farewell tributes” slots for the two on Tuesday – an occasion in which fellow parliamentarians acknowledge contributions.

However, final confirmation will only come when political parties submit their candidate lists to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) by 5pm on Wednesday.

The lists would be available for public scrutiny at the IEC’s national office from March 28 to 31, the IEC said, and anyone wanting to object should do so in writing by April 1.

Wednesday is also the day political parties must pay a R200 000 deposit to contest the elections nationally, and an additional R45 000 for each province selected by a party.

Both Motlanthe and Manuel declined nomination to the ANC national executive committee at the 2012 December Mangaung conference in what was widely seen as a firm public signal they would bow out.

At the time, it was announced Motlanthe would go on to head the ANC’s political school.

Manuel has long been rumoured to be in the running for a job at either the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.
