Bhisho -Eastern Cape ANC MPL Christian Martin has been punished by the province's legislature ethics committee for referring to the DA as peacocks.
“I, Christian Martin, a former public works MEC and currently ANC MPL, has been penalised with one month’s salary (October 2013),” Martin said in a statement on Sunday.
“Furthermore, I will be suspended from participating in the activities of the house and its committees for a period of 30 days starting from October 1, 2013.”
This was after Martin refused to withdraw his statement during a sitting of the legislature in Bhisho on Thursday,
His comments were made during the legislature's programme of “Taking legislature to the people”, which was held in Humansdorp in October last year.
Martin said that after he was asked to withdraw the statement he requested that the matter be referred to the ethics committee so that he could explain himself.
The committee had found him guilty of using “unparliamentary language”.
During Thursday's sitting of the house Martin said he accepted the committee's decision.
“My 'peacock statement' was never directed to any single individual, but to one particular party, which is the DA,” he said.
“The DA who portray themselves as the stewards of moral conduct and the moral measure for what is wrong or right in the political arena and society in general. This is why I referred to them as conducting themselves as peacocks.”
Martin said this was why he would not apologise nor withdraw his statement.
“I made the statement out of conviction, and will elaborate more on it when granted the opportunity to do so,” he said.
