Parliament - Several MPs should know their HIV status, after the HIV, counselling and testing (HCT) campaign finally reached the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces on Tuesday.
The politicians joined over 18 000 South Africans who have been tested since President Jacob Zuma launched the HCT campaign in April 2010.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has been calling for politicians and other powerful individuals to lead by example by testing first, in a bid to reduce the stigma attached to the pandemic.
“This day has arrived today and I'm very excited about that,” Motsoaledi said.
“It gives me great pleasure to be here today at this extremely powerful place in the country to launch the HCT campaign for members of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa as well as all who work here.”
MPs and parliamentary staff were also screened for tuberculosis and other chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
