Thaba Chweu - Eskom has agreed to keep the lights on in Thaba Chweu despite the municipality's R163 million debt, the Mpumalanga government said on Monday.
Co-operative governance MEC Simon Skhosana and Thaba Chweu mayor Michael Ncongwane met the electricity distributor on Friday and arrangements were made to settle the debt.
It was agreed that the municipality would pay off the debt over the next 12 months. Eskom agreed to conduct a cable audit to determine any illegal connections. It would help the municipality ensure its billing system was accurate.
“I would like to appeal to all residents and businesses to also play their part by paying for their electricity accounts,” Skhosana said.
