Tshwane - As expected, Solly Msimanga of the DA has been officially installed as the new mayor for the City of Tshwane after he was elected unopposed on Friday.

Msimanga was nominated by DA's Marietha Aucamp, after another DA member Katlego Richael Mathebe was elected unopposed as the new Speaker for Tshwane council.

Mathebe presided over the process to elect the new mayor.

Msimanga takes over the reins after the ANC failed to retain the city during the recent municipal elections.

Mathebe's appointment to oversee the council proceedings for the next five years was accompanied by the singing of songs. Mathebe, former Cope member in Tshwane, crossed the floor earlier this year to join the DA. She takes over the position was previously occupied by ANC member Morakane Mosupyoe-Letsholo.

Mathebe said:"Together we will run our meeting effectively and efficiently, always bearing in mind our responsibilities to accelerate service delivery."

Christo van der Heever was nominated as the chief whip and elected unopposed.
