Tshwane – The new team of Tshwane’s members of the mayoral committee, revealed at a press briefing on Friday, will hit the ground running in order to serve residents of South Africa’s capital city with humility, newly-elected Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga said.

“I’m proud to lead this team of diverse and talented servants of the public. We, as a team, will work to bring the change that we have promised the people of Tshwane, and the change that Tshwane so desperately needs,” Msimanga told reporters in Centurion.

“There is no time to rest and we will hit the ground running. I’ve told them that we will hold each and every one of them to the highest standards which we’re holding all our officials where we do govern. We pride ourselves on running clean governments. They will be held accountable to that high standard.”

Ten mayoral committee portfolio members join the council speaker Rachel Mathebe, the chief whip Christo van der Heever and the executive mayor to form the mayoral committee of 13 members.

The health and social development portfolio is led by MMC Sakkie Du Plooy of the Freedom Front Plus. Community Safety was given to MMC Derek Kissundooth of the African Christian Democratic Party.

“The mayoral committee shows the multiparty nature of this Democratic Alliance-led government. We welcome the committee members from the parties were have formed the multiparty government with. We will be charging them to deliver to the people with the same enthusiasm and same vigour that we expect from all our public representatives,” said Msimanga.

“This mayoral committee is ready to govern with humility, to listen to the people who voted us in, so that we can bring the change for a better future to the residents of this capital city. We want to bring capital back into the capital city.

“I want to lead a capital city that all of South Africa can be proud of and these are the men and women, from different backgrounds … and we’re ready to serve our people.”

The other portfolio have been allocated as follows:

* Infrastructure is led by MMC Darryl Moss;

* Economic Development is under MMC Randall Williams;

* Roads and Transport is under MMC Sheila Senkugube;

* Agriculture and Environment is under MMC Mike Mkhari;

* Human Settlements is led by MMC Mandla Nkomo;

* Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture is led by MMC Ntsiki Mokhotho;

* Finance is led by MMC Mari-Lise Fourie;

* Corporate Services is led by MMC Cilliers Brink.

Msimanga was elected Tshwane mayor last week after leading the opposition Democratic Alliance to outrun the African National Congress at the August 3 tightly-contested local government elections.
