Port Elizabeth - ANC Eastern Cape chairman Pumulo Musaulle is the favoured candidate for provincial premier, the party said on Thursday.

The special provincial executive committee met on Wednesday and unanimously agreed to put forward Musaulle's name, African National Congress provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said in a statement.

“We also wish to put it on record that in the history of Eastern Cape politics, it has never happened that the ANC takes an hour discussing the matter.”

Prior to Musaulle taking over as chairman in 2009, it would take more than a day for the committee to decide on three names to be submitted to the party's national headquarters because of deep divisions and other political interests, he said.

“This alone confirms the quality leader in Cde Pumulo Musaulle.”

His name would be formally handed over to national ANC officials on Sunday, Mabuyane said.

“We are hoping that they will not have a different view from our decision.”
