Durban - The ANC will on Sunday host a star-studded music showpiece featuring local artists to mark the closure of centenary celebrations.

The closing ceremony at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Arena next to the International Convention Centre in Durban will be addressed by President Jacob Zuma. The event will also double as the retirement ceremony of the party’s National Centenary Flame.

National spokesman Jackson Mthembu said the flame, which has been criss-crossing the country since last January, would now be kept at the ANC headquarters.

“The flame will be placed at the ANC National Heritage Institute that is yet to be built,” he said.

The flame made its second stop in KwaZulu-Natal last week. It had spent April 2012 moving to 11 of the province’s regions before being handed over to the Eastern Cape.

Re-elected national chairwoman Baleka Mbete will address the ceremony. Some of the artists who will perform at the event are jazz sensation Jonas Gwangwa, pop artist Zahara, Durban crooner Zakes Bantwini, top-selling female DJ Cindo, house duo DJ Mahoota and Vetkoek, DJ Tira, and gospel singers Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Sfiso Ncwane and Gamelihle.

Entry to the event costs R30 or R150 for VIPs. Doors open at 1pm. - Sunday Tribune
