The SABC hopes to broadcast the remaining fixtures in Orlando Pirates' African Champions League football campaign, the broadcaster said.

Johannesburg - The SABC must be free from political interference, the Media Workers' Association of SA (Mwasa) said on Wednesday.

“Mwasa calls on The Presidency not to endorse the process followed in imposing the interim board and to indeed insist on an inclusive, consultative engagement above expediency,” it said in a statement.

“If the workers do not generally trust the process, we may not find resonance with the outcome,” said Tuwani Gumani, Mwasa general secretary.

The SABC board was officially dissolved on Tuesday after a meeting of Parliament's communications portfolio committee.

An interim board was to take over the reins in the meantime and was approved by the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Mwasa said the decision to “ram through” the nomination and recommendation of interim board candidates without thorough scrutiny was negligent and amounted to dereliction.

“Mwasa is utterly disheartened and disappointed following the rushed hatchet job of imposing an interim board at the SABC,” he said. - Sapa
