Rustenburg - The North West's Ngaka Modiri Molema municipality has been placed under administration, the local government department said on Tuesday.

“The municipality has been experiencing governance and administrative challenges, and this adversely affected the delivery of services,” the provincial department said in a statement.

“The provincial executive committee has therefore resolved to appoint an administrator and an intervention team.”

The decision was taken after a report on the state of local government was presented to the province' executive committee on July 2.

Ngaka Modiri Molema comprises the Mahikeng, Ramotshere Moiloa, Tswaing, Ditsobotla, and Ratlou local municipalities.

The district municipality has 37 council members, led by mayor Phaladi Audrey Saku.

The municipality failed to provide support to the local municipalities in terms of the Municipal Structures Act, the department said.

“The council also failed to act on alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption, general compliance with applicable legislation, and regulations governing local government.”

A meeting, to be led by North West local government MEC Collen Maile, would be held on Thursday to ensure the intervention was effectively implemented.
