Bloemfontein - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s pleas to the Olifantshoek community to reopen three schools which were closed in public protests failed, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Friday.

Madonsela told the community during a meeting that she would involve the Auditor-General to help look into alleged maladministration at the Gamaragara municipality.

She said the investigations would indicate whether somebody would be charged with maladministration or not.

The report said residents were still demanding that the mayor, Maria Dinoza, be fired.

Several documents of alleged corruption were apparently handed to Madonsela.

She told the community that she could not talk for the ANC on their deployment of people.

The newspaper said several parents indicated they would like to send their children back to school but were afraid of victimisation and intimidation.

Many children also wanted to go back to school but realised they would not complete the school year successfully.

The pupils have accepted they would have to repeat the school year to achieve better marks, the newspaper said.
