Cape Town – The DA’s Japie van der Linde has been elected as the new mayor of Beaufort West following the DA’s victory during the by-election in the municipality last week.

Daylin Mitchell, DA Beaufort West constituency head, said on Wednesday: "As Constituency Head I would like to congratulate him. I am excited about the clean, efficient and corruption-free governance which we can now bring to Beaufort West Municipality, as well as the many opportunities and growth through our proven track record of sound service delivery.

"The inauguration of the new mayor will also continue to bring much needed change to the region."

Last Wednesday’s by-election was as the result of the resignation of the ward’s former councillor, Djorge Malooi, earlier this year who was also the municipality’s mayor.

The DA won with 56.9% (1724 votes), followed by the ANC with 1251 and the EFF with 52 votes.

More than 4 000 people were registered to vote across five voting districts that make up the ward.
