Johannesburg - The National Freedom Party welcomed more than 400 new members from the Durban area to the party on Monday.

“Today we welcomed new members... they were professional nurses, religious leaders and business people,” NFP secretary general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa said.

“They come from Phoenix, Chatsworth, and the City of Durban and surrounding areas.”

NFP leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi welcomed the new members at the Beach Hotel in Durban.

Khubisa said among those who had joined were 50 Islamic religious leaders, 350 nurses and some professional soccer players.

On Sunday, the SABC reported that 66 African National Congress members in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, had defected to the National Freedom Party.

The NFP was in the area on Sunday, campaigning.

“We were there to do a door-to-door campaign,” the party's Gauteng chairman Bheki Gumbi told the public broadcaster.

“We ended up our rally in Mandela [Stadium] where we welcomed 66 members led by women's league members from the ANC.”
