Paul Ngobeni’s job as legal adviser to Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu hangs in the balance.
Sisulu suspended him without pay for 30 days with immediate effect on Monday after an internal investigation she ordered in the wake of his open letter responding to Planning Minister Trevor Manuel’s public attack on cabinet spokesman Jimmy Manyi.
On his return to work, Ngobeni must submit written reasons to Sisulu why he should not be released from his duties as her legal adviser, a ministry statement said.
Ngobeni was unaware of his suspension when the Cape Times approached him for his response on Monday.
“I’m hearing this for the first time from you. I can’t comment on something I don’t know about,” he said.
Ministry spokesman Ndivhuwo Mabaya told the Cape Times that the letter of suspension was sent to Ngobeni’s lawyers.

Sisulu ordered the internal probe after Ngobeni’s letter to Manuel was published on March 6. In it, he tore into Manuel, accusing him of targeting Manyi in “a gangster-like fashion”, and suggested that President Jacob Zuma remove him from the cabinet for his “unconstitutional actions and political grandstanding”.
Ngobeni’s suspension follows his apologising “for the embarrassment the letter may have caused to … President Jacob Zuma and the minister”, and which he had written in his “personal capacity”.
Sisulu distanced herself from the letter yesterday. “The minister and the Ministry … would want to confirm that they are not part of this public encounter and have never been consulted or informed of the letter,” the statement said.
“The minister distances herself from the open letter and all its contents and wishes to reconfirm that the open letter in no way represents her views.”
Ngobeni entered the fray after comments by Manyi, when still director-general of labour, that coloured people were in over-supply” in the Western Cape were re-published, unleashing a race row.
His suspension was welcomed by opposition parties.
“He (Ngobeni) is reportedly a fugitive from justice in the US and is being investigated by the Public Protector,” said DA spokesman on defence, David Maynier MP. - Political Bureau

Trevor has always been a legendary comrade with all the wits expected of a leader. Hey, passop jong!Punting him to become the future president of this country could draw some huge criticisms from the malemas of this world. Some may dub him as a counter-revolutionary and the the vanguard of white minirity capital.

Hey Trevor, you were in the running for leader of the ANC after Thabo but unfortunately you weren't black enough and your principles were also a threat to all the mamparas in the ANC like JZ, Julius, Cele etc. etc. I can't understand how you can hang with scum like that? What are you getting from it except stress?

VOTE DA!! The only non-racial party for all South Africans that will deliver a better life for all. The only party that really fought for liberation and put their own well being on the line during the Apartheid era. The ANC libertaing RSA is a farce!! They didn't liberate anyone. They still would have been running around Zim getting their a***s kicked if it wasn't for the west and parties like the PFP (DA)!!

Cde Ngobeni antagonizes folks because of his forthright manner, his formidable intellect and his unblemished track-record as a prize-fighter for the rights of the emerging elite. How quickly his critics forget his selfless struggle on behalf of the asset manager judge and our beloved president..his courageous defiance of American imperialist law..one could continue ad infinitum. Yes,perhaps this time he did overstep the bounds somewhat [but how he was provoked!]..but he will learn from this experience. No doubt he will re-emerge,hopefully as a future Minister of Justice. We cannot afford that such talent is wasted.

wel i thought his letter was stupid. But Y was he suspended? I don't get it. Is it bcos he rubbed de big guns in a wrong way? What does it have to do with his job? Did he even write the letter on behalf of the defense ministry no. So ANC is using cheap tactics to cover its back; now dey ar holding Schabir in cells jst so de elections pass now dey suspend Ngobeni just so elections pass. If he was fired for being a fugitive den I would understand.

How can a cabinet minister havea legal advisor a person on the run from USA police?
Themba, wrote
@Maureen Would you then recommend the same for someone who spoke out against a Minister you may not like, or is this a principled stance on your side where you believe that people should be limited in what they say regardless of what they are saying? Whatever happened to "I disagree with you, but I will fight for your right to say it"

Looks like Ngobeni is well suited for his job. The US want him on charges of forgery, larceny and, it would seem, theft. All the qualifications you need to become a senior member of the ANC. Athough the theft would have to be upgraded from petty to serious in order to really get the top jobs. Nice to know you can still trust the ANC to put the "right" people in the right jobs.
