A decision by the ANC in North West to remove five provincial executive committee members was invalid, the party said on Wednesday.
ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said national officials met the North West branch on Tuesday.
“The meeting followed an unconstitutional removal of some of the ANC PEC (provincial executive committee) members... (and) reaffirmed the PEC as elected last year,” he said.
The provincial chairman, Supra Mahumapelo, treasurer Philly Mapolane, deputy provincial secretary Gordon Kegakilwe, spokesman Kenny Morolong and PEC member Matthew Wolmarans were dismissed during a party meeting at the weekend.
Mantashe said the PEC was divided over several issues.
A meeting would be held between national officials and North West national executive committee (NEC) members on Monday to deal with the matter.
“The national officials have decided to engage NEC members who are deployed in the North West province under... comrade Thaba Mufamadi,” Mantashe said.
“This meeting will be convened to craft a political intervention in the North West.”
Police had to use teargas to separate two ANC groups that clashed in Mahikeng on Sunday before the start of the party's provincial general council.
According to the SABC, the squabble broke out when supporters of provincial secretary Kabelo Mataboge prevented Mahumapelo's supporters from entering the venue. – Sapa
