Johannesburg - The first female treasurer-general of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Sylvia Benjamin, who recently died, was a trailblazer and will be missed, the union said on Saturday.

“She has been with the NUM through thick and thin even during the most turbulent times of the 80's. She will be solely missed” says NUM general secretary Frans Baleni in a statement.

Benjamin was among it's first leaders and laid the groundwork for NUM's finances.

“The NUM owes its success in the latter years to her sound financial stewardship,” Baleni said.

He offered his condolences on behalf of the union to Benjamin's friends and family. - Sapa
