Johannesburg - The election of “worker leaders” to the ANC's national executive committee was welcomed by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Friday.

“We are particularly excited that the number of worker leaders has increased and this takes forward the Cosatu decision of swelling the ranks of the ANC” said NUM general secretary Frans Baleni in a statement.

“We congratulate in particular the NUM President Senzeni Zokwana, who has been elected to the NEC, as well as all working class leaders elected to the one decision making body of the ruling party”.

Trade unionists who were elected onto the party's NEC at this week's conference in Mangaung were Congress of SA Trade Unions president Sidumo Dlamini, and Nehawu general secretary Fikile Majola.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi declined nomination.

Baleni said that NUM looked forward to seeing the “progressive” policies adopted at the conference being implemented.

“NUM is further encouraged that contrary to what many prophets of doom had predicted of a conference descending into chaos, we have witnessed democracy at best at this conference,” he said. - Sapa
